Verify Your Domain
Before we monitor a domain, you prove it's yours by adding one small DNS record. It sounds technical, but it's copy, paste, and save. About 5 minutes.
Why we ask for this
We only monitor domains when the owner says it's okay. Adding a record in your domain's settings is the standard way to prove you control it. Nobody but the domain owner (or their IT person) can do it. Adding this record doesn't change your website or your email.
Step 1: Copy your record
Your setup page (the link in your welcome email) shows the exact record to add. It has three parts:
| Type | TXT |
|---|---|
| Name / Host | @ (this means "the main domain") |
| Value / Content | bits-verify= followed by your own code. Copy it from your setup page exactly. |
Leave TTL at whatever your provider picks.
Step 2: Find where your DNS lives
This is usually the company where you bought your domain or pay for your website, like GoDaddy, Cloudflare, Namecheap, Bluehost, Squarespace, or Wix. Not sure? Search your email for "domain renewal." Whoever bills you for it is almost always the place.
Still not sure? Email us your domain name and we'll look it up and tell you where to go.
Step 3: Add the record
GoDaddy
- Sign in and go to My Products, then Domains.
- Click your domain, then DNS (or Manage DNS).
- Click Add New Record and choose type TXT.
- Name:
@. Value: paste your code. Click Save.
Cloudflare
- Sign in and click your domain.
- Go to DNS, then Records, and click Add record.
- Type: TXT. Name:
@. Content: paste your code. - Click Save.
Namecheap
- Sign in and open Domain List. Click Manage next to your domain.
- Open the Advanced DNS tab and click Add New Record.
- Choose TXT Record. Host:
@. Value: paste your code. - Click the green checkmark to save.
Bluehost
- Sign in and go to Domains. Pick your domain, then open its DNS settings.
- Find the TXT section and click Add Record.
- Host record:
@. TXT value: paste your code. Save.
Squarespace, Wix, and others
Look for Domains, then your domain, then DNS settings or DNS records. Add a custom record with type TXT, host @, and your code as the value.
Common mistakes: typing your full domain in the Name/Host box instead of @; adding quote marks around the value; or changing an existing TXT record. Add a new one. Don't delete or edit any records that are already there, because some of them keep your email working.
Step 4: Tell us to check
- Go back to your setup page and click Check now.
- Changes can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour to show up. If it doesn't verify right away, that's normal.
- You don't have to keep clicking. We check automatically every hour for 7 days, and your first report starts as soon as it works.
Once you're verified, your first report shows up in your inbox shortly after. Then it arrives every week.
Have an IT person or web company?
Forward them this page along with the record from your setup page. Any IT person can do this in 2 minutes. You can leave the record in place afterward. It's harmless.
Stuck? You're not bugging us.
Most setups take a few minutes, but nobody should have to fight with a settings menu alone. Email sales@biggeritsolutions.com or call 706.631.0778. Tell us what you're trying to do and where you got stuck. If it's easier, we'll hop on a quick screen share and do it together.
